This is the Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct that crosses the Gardon River in southern France. Built in 40-60AD the bridge has stood for over 1900 years, why? Because it has integrity.
The Pont du Gard has faced plundering of its stones, three serious floods and a whole variety of wars, but it remains standing for two main reasons:
The original care and attention put into its construction
The ongoing maintenance, improvisation and popularity
The construction of the Pont du Gard would have taken about fifteen years, employing between 800 and 1,000 workers, no small undertaking by any means; but the care and attention put into its construction is obvious and the results are breathtaking.
When building a brand the same due care and attention is required, not thought out properly or built in a constructive and efficient way a brand can topple and fall. In 1703 the Pont du Gard received its first major renovation and in 1743-47 a purpose built bridge was integrated to allow road traffic to cross. In 1855-58, under the instruction of Napoleon III, the aqueduct received a further major restoration and to this day is one of France's Top Tourist Attractions.
Much like the Pont du Gard, every brand requires both maintenance and regeneration. Without a regular check-up, business branding can become stale and old fashioned.
